A few days ago, I played battlefield 2042 in a closed beta event. I was playing the game on an open beta version of the game which is important to keep in mind as there were several bugs that need to fix and performance challenges that need solving. However, having said that I want to start the article “Battlefield 2042 first impressions” with one of the most epic immersive experiences I’ve ever had in an online multiplayer game.
My first impression of this map is very positive. There is plenty of room for infantry operations, lots of sniper spots, and lots of room for vehicle combat too. It just seems like it is possible to play it in almost any playstyle you wanted here. Except maybe for close-range SMG-shotgun play as if you went with a close-quarter weapon I felt like you would often get in trouble due to the reduced range.
At that time, I experienced a tornado on Battlefield 2042 and decided to chase it down for a ride. My jaw dropped to the floor and I had chills all over my body. You need to experience this for yourself. The map I played was called orbital and it’s a map where the Americans and the Russians are fighting over control of a rocket launch site. The rocket will launch and can be damaged to the point where it explodes.
Unfortunately, I always seem to get myself killed to the right as the rocket was about to launch or just get myself caught up in too much fighting. So I really didn’t manage to capture some cool footage, so you will have to experience this for yourself.
The game features state-of-the-art modern graphics with very realistic-looking colors. The almost photorealistic color palette makes the game more real and immersive and I am a huge fan of this which makes a good Battlefield 2042 impression. I only played the game on ultra or max fidelity settings. And I had some issues enabling my fps overlay and since I only had few days to play the game, I decided not to bother too much with that.
I felt like the game was running at 100fps, there were definitely moments of small stutter, and noticeable frame drops, and I was playing on pretty much on max settings here, so honestly, that’s not too bad I think.
Thoughts On Gun Mechanics
Now to the part that excites me the most, the gun mechanics. Battlefield 2042 has great gun mechanics and as a PUBG player, I only truly get satisfied when I am actively controlling the recoil of my weapon when I am shooting and boy, you do have to control the recoil of some weapons.
The vector has a lot of recoils and despite me really appreciating where they are going with this, I feel like the recoil needs some balancing to really make sense to make a good battlefield 2042 impression.
As an example, I have less recoil when standing and shooting with an LMG than if I shoot a kitted out vector, which is an SMG specifically, designed to vector the recoil downwards rather than rearward to reduce the amount of recoil. While this is probably due to balancing, it just felt a bit off to me that the assault rifles are definitely and overall the most balanced choice to make.
They have decent performance, as you will see but also the kill quick and close quarters and strong on medium range.
Another thing that bothered me a little bit was the gun handling though. There was no difference in recoil between being prone, crouched, or even standing could have been a decision made to simplify the gun mechanics but I just feel like this one is a bit weird. Still keep in mind that this could get rebalanced before launch and in theory, could even be a bug.
I am just reporting to you what I have experienced. The guns have a great overall look and feel I enjoyed the gun sounds and the weapons I have tried seemed cool. This was definitely partly because of the smooth attachment system that the game has. With the press of a button you bring up a menu where you can change attachments around on the go so if you find yourself in need of a scope just put one on and when you go close quarters just put back that red dot back on. The time to kill felt overall quite good too. However I felt like a lot of guns on long-range shots had a bit too much damage fall off so on range snipers will dominate which I guess kind of makes sense.
Thoughts On Vehicles
I did not drive a lot of vehicles but I got to drive an anti-aircraft vehicle that certainly felt quite powerful and I’d say vehicles are very powerful versus infantry in this game but somehow I rarely found myself getting killed by vehicles when playing infantry. This is probably not so much power between the individual vehicles versus infantry but rather the amount of vehicles versus infantry. There is just a lot of players when you put 128 players on a map like this and only a handful can drive a vehicle.

The movement system in this game is very smooth in general and I’m sure that the developers have taken inspiration from Apex Legends because not only did the slide jump trick from Apex seem to work here, you get that extra piece of momentum by crouching and jumping right after. The controls are identical but we also have zip lines in many locations and you can shoot while you ride them and one of the operators called Mackay also has a grappling hook just like pathfinder in Apex.
The movement system reminds me of Apex legends is not necessarily a bad thing, it certainly makes the game faster-paced and agile than you might be used to though. It made a good Battlefield 2042 impression on me.

I loved Bf4 sniping and even though I do miss the V button to change your range on your sniper I actually love sniping in 2042. Maybe it’s cuz I like to rush with snipers sometimes and just try to noscope / quickscope close range. Also there are a lot of guns that I would place higher dependant on the situation. I liked burst guns in bf4 but I can’t say I like them in 2042. Most of the burst guns i’ll just swap em to single tap. Like for me personally the ac42 burst would be lower than the ac42 single tap. Was interesting to see how someone else thought about the guns.
